Harikumar is an eminent film maker and writer working predominantly in Malayalam cinema. He has directed 17 feature films and a number of Telefilms & documentaries in his remarkable career spanning over 30 years. He is the recipient of major awards and accolades including the National Film Award for the Best Malayalam Film for his 1994 feature 'Sukrutham' which also bagged the Kerala State Film Award for outstanding brilliance in direction. The Film 'Sukrutham' has been included in many International Film festivals including Indian Panorama.
Harikumar has about 50 short stories, film reviews and articles to his credit. He has been part of Jury for various major Award Committees including National Film Award Committee (3 times- 1996, 2007, 2010) and Kerala State Govt Film and Television Award Committees (1993, 2013 & 2005, 2013). His interest in film academics lead him to the International Conference on Global Diaspora Studies: Contexts and Configurations in association with UGC-SAP, where he presented a paper titled 'Diaspora and Cinema'. Actively associated with Film Societies since 1975, he is the founder president of the Kollam based film society, Samvedana Film Society.
